A week-by-week timeline to keep your interstate move organized and stress-free.
Moving across state lines involves dozens of tasks spread over several weeks. Use this checklist to stay on track from the day you decide to move through your first week in your new home.

- Research and compare moving companies or brokers — verify USDOT numbers at FMCSA.gov.
- Create a home inventory of all items you plan to move.
- Set a moving budget and start tracking expenses.
- Begin decluttering room by room — donate, sell, or discard items you no longer need.
- If renting, review your lease and provide required notice to your landlord.
6 Weeks Before
- Get written estimates from at least three carriers or brokers.
- Review and understand the type of estimate offered (binding vs. non-binding).
- Book your mover and confirm the pickup window.
- Start gathering packing supplies: boxes, tape, bubble wrap, markers.
- Arrange school transfers, medical records, and prescription refills.
4 Weeks Before
- Begin packing non-essential rooms (guest rooms, storage areas, garage).
- Notify the post office of your address change (USPS.com).
- Update your address with banks, insurance, subscriptions, and employers.
- Schedule disconnection of utilities at your current home and connection at your new home.
- Plan travel arrangements if driving or flying to your new location.
2 Weeks Before
- Confirm all details with your moving company or broker.
- Pack the majority of your belongings — label every box by room and contents.
- Set aside important documents, medications, and valuables to carry with you.
- Dispose of hazardous materials that cannot be shipped (propane, paint, chemicals).
- Back up important files and photos from your computer.
1 Week Before
- Finish packing all remaining items.
- Defrost and clean your refrigerator if it is being moved.
- Disassemble large furniture and bag all hardware.
- Prepare an essentials box: toiletries, change of clothes, phone charger, snacks, basic tools.
- Confirm the carrier's arrival time and your point of contact.
Moving Day
- Be present during the entire loading process.
- Review and sign the Bill of Lading — keep your copy accessible.
- Note the condition of your items on the inventory sheet before the truck departs.
- Do a final walk-through of your home — check closets, attic, garage, and yard.
- Lock up and hand over keys as required.
After Delivery
- Inspect all items at delivery and note any damage on the inventory sheet.
- Unpack essentials first — kitchen, bedroom, bathroom.
- File a claim with the carrier within 9 months if items are lost or damaged.
- Update your driver's license and vehicle registration in your new state.
- Register to vote and explore your new community.
